Spike Jonze
Adam Spiegel, known professionally as Spike Jonze is an American filmaker, photographer and actor whose work includes music videos, commercials, film and television. He is known for his off-beat style of visual storytelling, often using animation and puppetry in addition to live-action and visual effects.
Jonze began his career photographing skateboarders and then later, shooting street skateboarding films. His filmmaking style made him a high demand director of music videos during the 1990;s, resulting in collaborations with Beastie Boys, Fatboy Slim, Kanye West etc. A telling segment in "Video Days", one of his earliest and most widely revered skate videos, intercuts footage of skateboarder Mark Gonzales with scenes from Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory, This hybrid of the gritty and fantastical emphasises his contradictory style, a contrast that threads through Jonze's entire career.
The music videos for 'Only One' by Kanye West and 'Sabotage' by Beastie Boys were both directed by Spike Jonze and have similar home video styles with hand held shots. The video for 'Sabotage' is a homage to, and parody of, 1970s crime drama shows, with a playful and sarcastic nostalgia that fuses Jonze's skate video aggression with retro sketch comedy.
