Statement of Intent draft

For my protest music video, I have chosen to use the song 'Hypersonic Missiles' by the artist, Sam Fender. Fender is a new and upcoming artist who writes indie rock music, often with meaningful messages behind his songs. I chose this song because as well as it fitting the brief, I am passionate about the protest message behind it and enjoy the song itself. The song is a dense, compelling picture of the modern world- from politics to social change to the world grinding to a halt thanks to climate change and war. I think this is a very current matter which is affecting everyone from all backgrounds, which is why it is important. The artist is someone that would make this protest because he is a young and aware person who understands the problems the world is facing and highlights how many young people feel a pressure to make change yet don't know how. The song was released in  March 2019 and I think the fact that it is a recent song, emphasises the protests importance and relevance in today's society. Therefore I know the song I have chosen is appropriate for the brief as it fits the age demographic of culturally aware 16-25 year old's as the artist has recognised the way young adults are affected. When describing the song Fender said, "In many ways, an unorthodox love song. Its main focus is on the world around the narrator. A character loosely based on myself. They are convinced that the world is on its last legs; they know that this is rife with injustice but feel completely helpless and lacking the necessary intelligence to change it while remaining hopelessly addicted to the fruits of consumerism" This, I would say is an accurate representation of a large portion of society. The lyrics makes reference to the bombings in Gaza, rising tensions in global politics, and the corporate machine. There is a glimmer of hope amongst the chaos in the song. The artist describes 'a little notion of no matter what, the two people are going to have a very good time regardless of the tyrants that run their world, and the imminent doom from these "Hypersonic Missiles"'. This song has put the alarming piece of weaponry at the forefront of people's minds. With this song, Sam Fender has caught the mood of the times.

I aim to create an indie, grunge aesthetic for my music video, I want to reflect the true, raw emotions of teenagers rather than what is glorified through the media. I think this will be refreshing as well as relatable for the target audience and inspire them to act upon the issues addressed in the song because they feel a connection with the characters and scenes in my video. I want to include a number of scenes that reflect things teenagers do, for example hanging out with friends in a field. I want to include intertextuality perhaps in a nostalgic way to highlight how drastically the world has changed from then to now. At first, the reference may be comforting for an audience member and then I aim for it to create a shocking after thought an realisation for the audience. Perhaps through the use of a childhood TV show playing in the background of a shot or having a childhood familiar character lying on the bed.
